Inside the Côtes du Rhône generic appellation, the Côtes du Rhône Villages label applies to a limited number of villages based on their history, quality and specificity - which translates as "term of controlled origin" is the French certification granted to certain French geographical indications for wines, cheeses, butters, and other agricultural products, all under the auspices of the government bureau Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (INAO).
